Mamakating Messenger’s goal is to provide local current events for readers interested in the Hudson Valley, New York municipalities of Bloomingburg, Mamakating, and Wurtsboro.
The articles gradually evolve — hopefully for the better. That’s Mamakating Messenger’s “slow cooking” multimedia recipe. When perfected, pieces are published in newspaper format, and distributed locally.
A print edition is scheduled for monthly tabloid format, free of charge, funded completely through advertising revenues. The idea is to give everyone in the community an opportunity to view and respond to a story — online — long before the newspaper comes out.
Even more important is the necessity for a unified local identity. Mamakating has long been drawn and quartered (and eclipsed) by neighboring towns and counties: Bloomingburg as a suburb of Wallkill; Phillipsport as a suburb of Ellenville; Wurtsboro as a suburb of Monticello; and Burlingham as a suburb of Pine Bush. Mamakating Messenger helps reunite these small hamlets — separated by mountains and rivers — back into a cohesive town.
Also Mamakating Messenger provides a much-needed advertising vehicle tailored for local businesses. Paid announcements can now reach their target audience with much greater effect, at an unbeatable price. Try as they might, outsiders will find it hard to compete with a news outlet that lives, works, plays, publishes and distributes right here in Mamakating.
Whenever relevant and feasible, audio clips of the source material are embedded directly into online articles. It is too costly to provide entire recordings of all public meetings. However, complete recordings do exist, and might be made available via Bit Torrent (free of charge), should demand for these resources justify the effort.
This is a one-man operation. One wonders why numerous other “news” ventures offer inferior coverage for extravagant prices — while at Mamakating Messenger, a lone individual out-performs them.
