Republicans sweep 2009 Mamakating town elections

Mamakating Democrats faced total defeat Tuesday night, when their incumbent town supervisor Bob Fiore lost his re-election bid to Bloomingburg fire commissioner Harold Baird.

Also swept into office were council candidates Regina Saunders and John Moul.

Saunders, a former town councilperson who lost two years ago to Teddy Brebbia, narrowly beat Ron Weathers this time around.

Superintendent of […]

Mamakating TB Workshop Meeting 2009-10-20

YouTube videos have been uploaded for the 2009-10-20 Mamakating town board workshop meeting, in six consecutive 10-minute segments.

The first four segments contain a proposal by town highway superintendent Richard Johnson, for the purchase of heavy duty trucks. The exchange is noteworthy because of the expensive burden which these capital expenditures place upon the municipal budget. […]

The Great Wall of Wurtsboro

This is probably the first time in years that a group of men aren’t hanging around Dino Morelli’s property for the purpose of urinating and/or defecating. Morelli lives next door to the Park & Ride lot at Quickway Exit 113 in Wurtsboro. After DOT built the parking area there, full-bladdered travelers transformed his driveway and […]

Three new video clips from Sept. 1st Mamakating TB meeting

[Note: I’m just throwing the links up for now, with quick descriptions I wrote on the YouTube posts. These are three clips from the Sept. 1st workshop meeting, almost 30 minutes worth of content: discussing the Phillipsport bridge repair, the Wurtsboro Hills lake foreclosure, and reducing speed limits along certain town roads. Also, I’m not […]

New video clip: Aug. 18th Mamakating TB Meeting

We have a clip from the Aug. 18th Mamakating town board meeting. Councilman Teddy Brebbia took councilwoman Judy Young to task for an alleged political announcement which occurred on a recent youth group bus trip. Young denied any impropriety. The exchange was followed by supervisor Bob Fiore making remarks about the town swimming pool. Finally, […]

Early Settlers of Mamakating

Helene Goetschius of the Mamakating Historical Society delivered a presentation on the early settlers of Mamakating, Thursday night, Aug. 20th, at the Old  Schoolhouse museum in Summitville. Several dozen people attended, including two town councilmen.

Much discussed material comes from the Mamakating chapter of James Eldridge Quinlan’s History of Sullivan County, 1873. Little else has been […]

Briggs shoots his mouth off…

Tuesday Aug. 11th was an interesting day in Sullivan County law enforcement. I found myself in Mamakating town court challenging a traffic ticket for expired inspection sticker. After three hours of waiting, the charge was dismissed. Most of the unhappy motorists did not fare so well, settling for plea bargains costing each defendant hundreds of […]

Mamakating Town Website Back Online

The Mamakating town website is now back online after a hiatus of 6+ weeks. Besides posing a grueling mess exceeding over 1000 HTML pages, it became infected by sophisticated badware, causing the site to be blacklisted by cyberspace giants Google & Firefox.

Internet Explorer users might not have noticed anything wrong — that’s only because such systems have very low […]

Old Resort: Homowackadoodle?

There seems to be only one class of people who frustrate local communities more than the Times Herald-Record. And that would be certain sects of ultra-orthodox Hasidic Jews.

People despise the Times Herald-Record for being the region’s only daily newspaper: such a powerful position, marred by an unapologetic tendency towards habitual errors (and omissions) of fact.

The […]

“Luck of the Irish” for TH-Record Photographer

It doesn’t happen too often, but on March 17th, the Times Herald-Record sent a staff member down to the Mamakating town board meeting. He didn’t stay long, maybe about fifteen minutes to take some “file photos” for the daily rag out of Middletown. Everyone knew he was from the mainstream media, because of the large […]

Mamakating Town Budget, Online in Several Formats

Well, we finally got our hands on the 2009 Mamakating Town Budget. Red tape and miscommunication took about three months to obtain original Excel spreadsheet computer files from the accounting firm. It remains unclear whether anyone would actually be interested in looking at the budget in soft format. Doing so allows more powerful analysis, such […]

Don’t Call Us, We’ll Call You

Pictured above are Michael Murphy and Laura Barker of HDR Engineering Inc., who consulted the Mamakating town council, planning board, and ZBA for the past year. Average billing was $15,000 per month, for approximately 19 projects per month, Barker said. The team handed out a large packet to board members, and spoke for over twenty […]

Teddy Brebbia Presents Long-Term Capital Plan

One of the more interesting items on the Mamakating town board agenda for 2009 is a long-term capital plan proposal, made by deputy town supervisor Ted Brebbia. He indicated that no similar prudent fiscal preparations have ever been enacted locally, to his knowledge.

Teddy’s long-term plan focuses on the town’s fleet of aging highway department trucks, […]

And now for something completely different…

Today’s Times Herald-Record featured a sensationalized article about tumultuous disputes at a recent meeting of the village board in Monticello, our Sullivan county seat.

At issue is the sudden replacement of Monticello village manager John Barbarite with Zachary Kelson. In the past, Kelson has served as attorney for the village Wurtsboro, and also the Mamakating planning board. He has been the […]

Strange Bedfellows

It began at the Sept. 2nd Mamakating town board meeting, as reported by the Mamakating Messenger. Town clerk Jean Dougherty brought along two friends, a pair of miniature gargoyles named “Chester” & “Jericho.”

By November 5th, a member of the public showed up with a medium-sized adjustable plastic “Godzilla” toy. This was the day after Election Day, when the postponed […]

During the Oct. 21st town board workshop meeting, Dick Reisling gave a presentation on solar power. Reisling is a member of the Sullivan Alliance for Sustainable Development in Hurleyville, and the Apple Pond Farm in Callicoon Center, NY, but appeared this evening on his own behalf. His proposal was for the town to erect a photovoltaic power array […]
